A Successful Long Weekend In Burgenland.

Another great Weinfrühling in our area.

It almost seems strange not to meander the vineyards with a glass of wine in hand. Yes, that is what most of us did this weekend and great fun it was. Note, I said meander not stumble! All good things must end and at least we are only 364 days away the next one. All in all, I imagine that the wine makers are happy and have sold a lot of their wine.

For Bob and I it is a return to a more quiet time as all of our family and friends have left. Our friends attended their second Weinfrühling in a row and I hope they enjoyed it. Overall it was their seventh visit to us and Eisenberg. It was fabulous to see how some of the locals came over to greet them and exchange news ( comical to hear an English & Burgenlandish conversation albeit finger language was included. )

In vino veritas is again proving its worth. Bob told me that when he and our friends from London
( they don't speak a word of German apart from " ein achtl wein bitte " ) were talking at the bar, one of the local ladies came over to greet them and proceeded to speak fluent English to them. Obviously with an accent, but she held a long conversation...the same lady who often is at the same functions as Bob and never ever has spoken a word of English with or to him in the last six years!!!

As we only spoke English it was nice to see how most of the local wine makers switched automatically into English in order to explain their wine and also to make our friends feel welcome. These little details are what is important, what is remembered and what makes people come back again and again...

A Leisurely Sunday Drive Mixed With The Odd Meal & A Swim.

Visitors need a special drive..

It is one of life's little ironies. Only when we want others to see the attraction of where we live, do we find those attractions. The rest of the year, Sundays are spent watching a TV screen or lazying the day away in a comfy lawn chair. Nothing to be sneezed at but all the same, it is much better to do a spot of sight seeing.

Saturday evening was a late one and that did delay our start to our leisurely Sunday drive. In our household ( with or without visitors ) I am usually the first one awake. Yesterday it was a case of having three hours of a head start. A head start that had me changing the plans a gazillion times only to settle on the original thought. My Sunday road map for our friends was mapped out. Mapped out rather nicely, so that everyone was in accord.

Those who know me, will not be surprised that food and eating is never left out when on a road trip of any sort. I had seen Aloisia's new menu a few weeks before and knew that she had put a divine looking breakfast on offer. An English breakfast, which is a treat anytime but a special treat when you have had a late night! Somehow I didn't need to persuade anyone to go there. Filling up the energy gauge, so to say.

The day couldn't have started better. The sun was shining, the sky was blue and the birds did their usual background sing song. We sat outside under a tree and just enjoyed life at that moment. No rushing around, no hurrying about and the only stressful thing to do was to choose which breakfast to have. Ideal holiday stuff. We all had the English Fry Up and my golly gosh, did we get a lovely surprise.

The menu had a photograph of it, but when it arrived, we each got 4 fried eggs. A speechless moment if there ever was one. The waitress was so nice and catered to us as if we were royalty. Great stuff indeed. When you consider that the breakfast consists of 2 ( or rather 4 ) eggs, loads of crispy bacon, toasted rye bread, a cup of coffee or tea and all that for Euro 4,50...you will forgive us for eating there more often!

Our next port of call was the Rechnitz Badesee which we could only reach via a short side trip to a street cafe in Lockenhaus. A cafe that is renowned for its homemade organic ice cream. Good lord, the things I know....We all had a healthy portion of it even though it was so soon after breakfast. Being driven around is demanding work and needs fuel.

Bob took us along the most scenic route to the Rechnitz Badesee. The others have been there a few times before, but ironically I hadn't been there yet. I must say, it was nice and such a big place. A kids paradise, no matter how old the kids are. Bob was in heaven and swam a few times.

That saying of: Don't swim after you have eaten must be a fallacy. Bob did not sink, just the opposite, he floated in leisure and with pleasure in the Rechnitz Badesee...

A perfect Sunday outing with perfect company.

Can you think of a nice spot to sit in? Romantic and idyllic all in one.
Nice, isn't it? It tasted so good...
Bob is bobbing about in the Badesee!
Happiness looks a bit like this...
Leaves arranging themselves to be photographed.
My Bob!
These carp are huge and have their own little paddling pool at the front of the lake. They do get fed yet beg for morsels all the time. I wish you could have seen the size of them...

Eisenberg: Great Fun, Better Scenery, Best Wine.

A weekend of fun.

As you know, our friends have come to stay for the weekend. Not their first time either, no, it is their fourth. Now isn't that a huge compliment to us and our area? When they arrived on Friday afternoon, we sat and chatted ( or rather reconnected as they are from London ) and had fun seeing each other again. During the conversation, they casually dropped the correct names of places and villages they want to see...imagine, Londoner's talking with a perfect Burgenland accent...Love it!

This weekend was the Eisenberg Kellergassen Fest and our friends wisely chose it to visit. We did warn them that they should bring sturdy walking shoes but I don't think they realized that we meant business. A lot of us had organized that we would walk to the Kellergassen Fest together. Our new friends from Eisenberg included us with open arms and as they go every year to the Kellergassen Fest, they had a plan of action.

Kick off time was at 16:30 in the village and of course it was blazing hot. The floods of Wednesday night a distant memory only. The walk to our destination usually takes about 40 minutes and most of those are a steep uphill. But our group had arranged pit-stops along the way for a drink or two. Very nice, very clever and great fun.

Our village has two parts, the village proper and a wine section - Eisenberg Weinberg and at the top of the Weinberg is a lane with various vintners and their Buschenschanks. On Saturday, the lane was closed to traffic and there were five Buschenschanks to sit and sample the vine & vittles of our area. The done thing is to meander from one end to the other and sampling the wines on offer.

Kids were having fun and parents even more. The atmosphere was just perfect and the weather divine. The view was of course unbeatable as this lane shows the whole panorama of our area. Our friends enjoyed themselves and we made sure they got a taste of local foods.

As happens to all nice evenings, this one too had to end at some point. We all knew that we still had to walk back about 40 minutes. The last time Bob and I walked home from a party
( eh, a mere three weeks ago ), we were accompanied by a bright moon, but last night, the man in the moon had a different idea and hid away. Traversing downhill in the dark is not recommended too often. Next year we'll have to remember to take a torch with us or a trendy miners light.

How To Clean A House: Boot Camp For Men & Kids Perhaps?

When friends come to visit, even the nooks & crannies get attention...

As I have said before, I have yet to master the art of not caring if friends see a bit of dust in our house. It is all very well saying that it doesn't matter but let's face it, the guilt strings run deep. Apart from the stupidity of only kicking into action when friends come to stay as opposed to doing it for ourselves, it is nice to spring clean more than once a year!

A lot of colonial households ( I say colonial because I noticed it in South Africa ) have that one spare room. A room used only now and again. A room that I always thought was stupid to keep but now...It is that extra lounge that most houses have. That lounge where only the best couch stands alongside the best table, china & everything else. Did I mention it was dust free and ready on stand by? A lounge, a.k.a. The fancy lounge not to be used by the kids or husband...

Even though this lounge is part of the house, it doesn't get used. Only when the V.I.Ps ( distant family and friends to impress ) come for a cup of coffee, does this room see action. At least it is always clean and near the front door. No need to see anything that shouldn't be seen...

Years back I remember how expat South Africans used to complain that their new friends would hardly ever invite them over for a B.B.Q. or coffee. They would rather meet in restaurants and coffee shops. South African housewives / wives were spoiled all their life. Most of them had a full time maid and have never had to occupy their time with washing dishes, ironing shirts, mopping a floor or dare I say cleaning a loo ( I shouldn't generalize, but a lot had that pleasure ).

Anywhere else in the world, having a cleaner clean your house is jolly expensive and not done as much. Often, it is just easier to meet your friends at coffee shops etc, than to do another spring clean ( let me know if you think I am right ).

So many South African families are moving away from South Africa on to a new country. What should be an adventure and a joyful new chapter in their lives, often turns into a moping and sad experience. The social media is filled with " when we's " ( when we were in S.A., we... ). If one takes the trouble to uproot and move somewhere else, one should embrace and love it, as it is a privilege.

It is often the women who take more strain moving overseas. Understandably so. Imagine never having to have done major housework and suddenly having to do it all. Remember, their husbands grew up not even knowing where the broom was kept, the exact location of the laundry basket yet alone the washing up liquid. They will possibly fight tooth and nail to not discover the location of a broom in their new home!

Personally, I think that before the families emigrate, they need to organize a six month cleaning boot camp and practice cleaning and tending a house alone. Without any maids. Husband and kids need to learn their chore rota....P/S: please don't kill the messenger.

And, by the way Bob helps in the household every day. No need for the gym when he lifts the vacuum cleaner to clean those ever present spider webs. Yeah.

The minute our friends step through the front door, I hope they will shout :

" Goodness, but your house is super clean ! "
anything less than that, I might reconsider making breakfast for them.....!

Life Lesson #888: Follow The Sheep.

Animals are in the know...

Sheep are notoriously weather hardened animals. They are most often seen strutting it out in mountainous terrain, on manicured lawns or wherever they happen to be grazing. Water or rather rain makes no difference to them. Or does it?

A happy herd of sheep is often seen touring the various backyards or lawns that need trimming. There is an organic sheep farmer in one of the neighbouring villages and he and his wife do take their big herd of sheep all over the district. They follow the long grass and frankly it would make Bob's life much easier if they would visit our backyard for a week or two. It feels so nice and rural when you spot the sheep all over.

As seems usual behaviour for us, we were showing our visitors " Aloisia's " and all the nice creamy cake creations she sells. Our friends made the expected ( from us ) sounds of delight. Stumbling across such a nice coffee & cake emporium in the midst of rural Burgenland seems to do that. To be honest, I still get enthralled by Aloisia's even if I have been there more than eh...once!

After having a strong cup of coffee we left and were on the way to the next stage of grazing. Oh yes, eating out is a must in Burgenland too. Parking at Aloisia's is done at the back and next to a huge meadow. In fact, from there you can see as far as the snow capped mountains of the next province. Rural, pastoral and green. Soul food.

At first I didn't see them, but when I looked closely I saw a few sheep hiding under an old cart.
( No, they were not from the organic troop but possibly Aloisia's sheep to wow us confectionery tourists / enthusiasts ) Goodness, they were clever and not a single hoof was exposed to the elements. We had just had a downpour and these sheep wanted to be sheltered. The odd thunder strike could be heard as well and I think that is what had them cowering there.

Waiting out the danger. Hanging safely until better conditions came. They took it easy and waited until the perceived danger passed. No stress and it did look rather fun. Maybe we need to take a leaf out of their book. Danger waited out in comfort seems a much better idea to me. Rushing headfirst into danger is more apt for Hollywood movies and a few adrenalin junkies...

A nice thought, hiding out under there!

Dogs Really Are Man's Best Friend.

An " Heuriger " with a difference

It was the last evening for family friends who were here for a visit and we celebrated by going to an Heuriger with a difference. ( An Heuriger is kind of like a Buschenschank, but open all year round ) It is at the edge of a forest not far from us. The owners have created an oasis of laws, complete with eccentric and mostly antique wooden equipment. Farming equipment from the days of yore that looks so romantic. An old tree trunk was polished and used as a bar table. Bob even counted the age-rings of it.

What they also have is a wonderful dog. A big black French sheep dog called Josi. Naturally, it was herding only Bob and I yesterday. Admittedly, at times either one of us could have conceivably be described as a silly sheep! Well, this delightful dog had us eating out of her ' hand '. In her case, her toy of choice was bitten through soccer ball that she hardly ever let out of her jaw.

When she had established the rules of her fetching game ( oh she was precise and only let go of the ball when Bob was standing at the right spot ) we were throwing, kicking and fetching this soccer ball. Ugh, the ball was getting more and more slippery with saliva the more we played. Bob in the end resorted to doing a few rather authentic soccer kicks.

The ground rules are being established and Josi clearly has Bob trained to her liking. Isn't the scenery nice? You can see the old tree trunk that is used as a bar table.
" Josi, drop the ball."
" Eh no, you grab it!"
Bob didn't stand a chance with this cute and delightful dog. Her character is so nice and gentle.
Just look at her ears flapping in the wind. Oh, both of them had so much fun doing this demonstration of Newton's Law...No one wanted to let go.
Isn't it just the best! Josie and Bob played for what seemed like hours but was only until the panting got too much....for both!
Who do you think is having more fun...?

Accents & Homemade Redcurrant Jam, What A Combo!

" Accentuating ones Accent "

Nobody wants to admit that they have an accent riding piggyback aboard their language. Yet those accents that we all do have make us special, unique and dare I say... unmistakable. Take yesterday evening for example: We could have been the setting of a bar joke...

A typical warm and sunny Burgenland evening outside next to the grill, complete with an:

  • Australian
  • Austrian
  • South African
  • American
  • German
As is only normal, the conversation turned towards accents.
Not that late in the evening either. Isn't there usually a time during any party where most of us do sound the same...you know, when we try like blazes to pronounce our ' sssses ' clearly and with attempted dignity.
Or rather someone asking if they actually had one!...Eh, yeees indeed, a broad and instantly recognizable one too!

The South African and Australian accents do often get mixed up outside of either country. Mainly in the States. No, nothing similar there but what can you do. Some of us get put into the same box:

  • The Irish & the Scots
  • The Australians & the New Zealanders
  • The Austrians & the Germans
  • The Americans and the Canadians

How do we know what we sound like? There were the odd occasions when I left a message on the answering machine but truthfully, it's not so nice to hear yourself speak. Somehow I sound much cooler in my head.

Accents do make a difference how one is perceived. Private schools make their living by guaranteeing an accent-free diction at the end. Especially in the English language, the gold standard to aim for is the Eton, Oxford accented speech ( speaking as if you had a hot potato in your mouth )...Thousands are paid to achieve it. If you can't afford those lofty portals, there is always a career as a TV announcer / Newsreader...they get coached to have a neutral accent. They all sound the same, don't they?

As for our redcurrant jam, what a hit it was with everyone. We organized vanilla ice cream for dessert and what nicer topping than this redcurrant jam. Sweet and tart together! Pale white & vibrant red. The jar was almost empty at the end...clearly, redcurrant jam puts a nice Burgenland accent on vanilla ice cream!

Take Choices Out Of Your Life & Have One!

Whittle down your lifestyle to one of ease and enjoyment.

Choices are flung at us from left, right and center. From the minute we get up it starts. Shower or bath? Coffee or tea? Toast or cereal? Dress or pants? Before we are even out our front door, we have already made several choices.

Friends of ours are here on holiday and staying down the road ( 2.4 km to be precise ). One of their main goals from this holiday was a chance to de-stress, unwind and jolly well relax! Cunningly they opted out of a rental car. For any shopping trips, they tag along with us. Remember, we are in a small village with just a village shop / tea room. The nearest town is 25 kilometers away and normally we drive there once a week.

If our friends want to go anywhere, it is on foot or of course with us. To come over for a cup of coffee involves a 4,8 km march. They love it. You know, how often do we go somewhere on holiday and are so worried in case we don't see it all, that everything becomes a blur? Staying put in one place for a longer amount of time....almost revolutionary!

Watching my friends unwind has been wonderful. Their faces have lost the harried and pinched look. The only choice that gets flung at them in the morning is, who has to get up to make the first cup of coffee! Sleeping the whole day....not a problem. Walking the whole day...not a problem. Reading the whole day...not a problem.

We should take a few of those pesky choices out of our everyday life. Let's transform our daily life into one of ease & enjoyment:

  • Going to work every day, why not take public transport? No more wondering if taking this or that road will be a shortcut.
  • Leave your credit card at home. In fact put it away in a safe place. Use cash or debit card only. Going shopping will become a breeze...wondering if to get this rather than that for dinner is much easier if you only have a finite amount of money with you.
  • Only take your cell/smartphone along if absolutely necessary. Imagine not having to choose whether you will answer a call or sms...

We have all heard of or read the adage: Life is a journey and not destination. and yet we do tend to forget. Not seeing everything that is available in life is absolutely fine. Remember, when you go to a buffet banquet, you also don't eat everything that is laid out...

The Essence Of Our Village Life Are Its Villagers.

Our visitors from South Africa caught a glimpse of it.

We were waiting for visitors on Sunday. As it was their first time in Burgenland and I knew they didn't speak German, I started to wonder whether they had gotten lost. It was already 7pm and there was no sign of them. Yet, knowing they had the address of their holiday cottage, I went to leave the key and a note.

I am almost too scared to say it, but we were again at a local Buschenschank ( it seems that this is where we hang out continuously ) with my parents and some friends when my Mum's phone rang. After a second, she handed it to me. It was Bruni, telling me that she had our guests with her, and that they were a little lost.

Bruni has a " Heuriger " - Restaurant - as you come into the village and her " Kümmelbraten Brot " is legendary

" Biggi, they just showed me a piece of paper with your first name on it, and I thought it must be you." How right she was. " Bruni, thanks so much. Please tell them to wait, I will be there in 5 minutes." That is the beauty of a small village. Everything is reachable in the proverbial 5 min.

When I got to her Restaurant, I could see my visitors. Their car was parked on the side of the road, and a man got out the car when he saw me stop. I was extremely relieved that they had found the place. As can only happen in a movie script, it turned out that I knew his wife from when we lived in South Africa. It is a small world indeed.

They are the most happy and friendly people and they also couldn't wait to tell me what they had seen while waiting for me.
" Birgit, can you believe it, we were sitting in the car when we saw an elderly man leave the Restaurant, walk down the steps and hop onto a lawn mower. A lawn mower that he used as his transport! " In between laughing fits, they described the scene to a tee.

He is a local ' legend ' who always motors about on his mobile lawn mower. That's an image they will never forget and I am pretty sure that this will be told to a few of their friends... But of course the thing that impressed them the most was how Bruni was so friendly and went out of her way to help them.

Well, they got a crash course of why our village is so special and I think they are converts already. As Arnie would say: " I'll Be Back..."

Pictures Of Our Friends Visiting..

It was like a Christmas Present for us.

Emigrating or Immigrating takes a lot of courage and good cheer. One of the main things that happens, is that you leave your family and friends behind.

Wonderfully for us, a few of our friends ( and family of course ) have taken the time, effort and money to come and see where we live...even twice. Bob and I are so chuffed knowing that they like us and our corner of Burgenland enough to visit more than once ! Here are a few moments captured on camera of the last visit...

Ok, this is Bob, a very proud Bob, with his first
bottle of " self-made " Schnapps using peaches
from our garden.

Having a bite to eat with our friends from South Africa.

Our friends from London ( via S.A. and New Zealand ) together with the S.A. ones...Great breakfast !

Can you tell that he is originally from South Africa ? Jeezalou, put on some shoes...!

Well, at least he is trying to warm up his feet....but really, barefoot in the snow ? That sounds like one of those fables my parents used to tell me...

Just to finish it up, a picture taken from our bedroom, showing the morning arrive, and snow with it...

What A Husband !

Do you sometimes compare your spouse to others ?

These last two weeks we have had four good friends staying with us. Two couples, and not at the same time. It is only when people stay overnight, that you get a glimpse of their daily routine.

Out of all of us, I was always the first to get up, even sometimes beating the chickens, or rather the rooster next door. Habit, routine or just genetic predisposition, regardless of what time I fall asleep, I normally wake up at the crack of dawn. So sitting in the lounge, I got to observe the different " waking up " patterns. Granted they were all on holiday.

Routine being so ingrained, I witnessed an interesting thing. The men got up before their ladies
( and by quite some time ), said their 'Good Mornings ' and headed for the kitchen, to get a cup of coffee....and brought it to their ladies bedside ! Coffee in bed, what a novelty.

Jokingly I pointed this out to Bob. His response was, " There is no way that I will get up earlier than you, to make you coffee. Forget it ". Good point and to be fair, I am too fussy with how I like my coffee, anyway. Though I hope, that both of my friends appreciate getting coffee brought to their bed.

The other day, when the chips were really down, Bob ( my treasure ) was there ! It being winter and cold, I had a few days of not feeling so great. Bob made me copious cups of tea and even made me my favourite soup. You know, the soup that my mum always used to make me, when I wasn't feeling well. When he asked me what I wanted, I just croaked out the name of the soup, and dozed off again.

Bob then phoned my Mum and asked her how to make this ' get well ' soup. My Mum, apparently, was so taken by the fact that Bob would make this soup for me ( in my time of need...where are the violins ? ), that I think Bob scored a million Brownie points as a son-in-law, and a gazillion as a husband !

It just goes to show, that every husband / partner, has his own individual strong points and as the saying goes : You can't compare apples and oranges...
As a matter of interest, how many of you get coffee brought to you in bed ?

Burgenland...Easy To Get To.

Visitors Galore....Yipee !

Since moving to Burgenland, we have been blessed by an abundance of friends and family coming to visit us. Wonderful. Mostly they want to see us, and where we have moved to, but I think the lure of Burgenland is also a major draw !

Living in South-Africa was super, but you tend to forget how long and expensive the trip to and from it are. One can't just " pop " over for the weekend. Well living here has been a revelation for me. Friends from London, are able to " pop " over for a weekend without breaking the bank. Again it takes time for me to get used to being in the middle of Europe.

Of course, before the iron curtain came down, Burgenland was at the " bottom " of Europe and almost forgotten by all. Yet now, Burgenland is in the middle of Europe and the " In " place to visit.

Our friends from London were here in August, sweltering yet having fun. As usual, we took them to one of the traditional local Buschenschanks. I wasn't sure if they would enjoy it, coming from sophisticated London. Well I was pleasantly surprised.

They loved the Buschenschank and the local wines so much, that when they told us they were coming this weekend, they only wanted to go to one of the Buschenschanks. Wow, I know Bob and I love our area and traditions, but to hear Londoner's liking them too....!

This weekend, we have two sets of friends that we know from South-Africa visiting. It makes me realize how special they are, to visit us and the fact that they both are here for the second time ( since Bob and I moved here ), makes them even more special. Of course they also all enjoy visiting our stunning part of Burgenland !

One Man's Back Of The Cupboard Item Is Another Man's Treasure !

Lederhosen....again !

As you know, Bob is enthralled with anything to do with Lederhosen. Every shop we go to, Murphy's law, there are Lederhosen that Bob can study in detail. Isn't it funny how, when you focus on a thing, it shows up everywhere you look. Definitely a case of " What you think you ink! "

Since we have moved here to Burgenland, we see a lot of my Uncles. Between them, they visit at least every six weeks ( they live five hours away ). The last time one of them was here, was our momentous October Fest. Between celebrating " Bavarian " style and having a blast, my uncle must have noticed how Bob and Albert love anything to do with those infamous Lederhosen.

Monday, my Uncle arrived unexpectedly for a visit. That is great in itself, but he came with a bag of gifts. He had brought his ' back of the cupboard, not used in years, stuff '. It was a pair of Lederhosen, that was over forty years old and a genuine pair. He wanted Albert to have them.

Albert took them into his hands while grinning with glee. Yet, he only hesitated a minute and turned to Bob, giving them to him. " I already have two pairs, you take them " ! Well, Bob's face was a study. If you can picture a young boy getting his most wished for toy, you know what Bob was like. When it sank in, that they were his, he almost raced inside, to try them on. That was after he did a little dance of joy, shouting at the top of his lungs...
" Yipee, I got a pair of Lederhosen ".

Of course Lederhosen are not so easy to assemble on your body ( only the first time ). The men gave handy pointers and before we knew it, we had a fashion show, with the happiest of models.

Of course, being the wife, I put in my unwanted advice, " Just remember that you can never wash them. Careful when you go for a # 1 "....only saying !

A weekend with friends.

The weather behaves !

Justin and Angela are traveling home today. This weekend has really flown, possibly due to the fact that we showed them a lot. In a way we are like little kids, showing off our place and not sure what to show them first...

The main thing was the weather and it behaved as if written into the script. Maybe a little bit too hot, as I saw them buy more sunscreen.
On Friday night we took them to a Buschenschank and they took to it like a ducks to water. We often heard:" This wine tastes so crisp and fruity " or " Oh gosh, this is so cheap. In London this would cost three times as much ", to which we cunningly replied " well, you'll just have to visit us more often !"

It goes without saying that I found a reason to drive through to Eberau to have some Ice cream with them. We have been so fortunate, having a lot of friends and family visiting. My favourite places
( such as the Ice cream place ) are taking notice. Lots of repeat business for them.

Somehow I have a feeling, that we converted another set of friends to our wonderful lifestyle, here in Burgenland. Next time someone " new " visits, I will write a subtext on the invite :
WARNING - this place gets under your skin and you won't want to leave !
