Weeding: Life, Garden Or Closet Is Jolly Hard Going.

Do you love or hate weeding of any sorts?

There are some folks out there who just can't resist pulling a weed the minute they see it
( eh, Mum ). Almost an obsession. Of course I try to oblige and not pull the weeds myself! Seriously though, on the whole I do weed but not as often as one should. When it comes to other avenues of weeding, the plot thickens.

By now you will know that today is the day to go to Hell ( or Höll as it's called in German ). Quite poetic to think that you take all your trash there. Yet, that is the problem. Weeding out trash from the " trash " so to say. If you have a shed of sorts, there is a good chance that you are in possession of a lot of paraphernalia that you don't ever need!

For some reason the sheds of the world are the last place of residence for old pots, pans, garden gnomes, broken gardening tools and those old dried up & half used buckets of paint. After the first year they almost become unusable and let's just say at year 3, they need to be tossed. Yet, maybe, years down the road those left overs will come in handy... Yeah, right!

Bob and I got together a trailer load full yesterday afternoon. Like boy scouts we made an effort this time to have the trailer fully loaded for the first run to Höll. Gosh, you should have heard us in the shed. We had those mini - discussions over what to toss out and what to keep.

" Don't you dare throw that piece of metal away. I can use it as decoration in my Bar when I build it sometime."
" Oh don't you dare throw that cup away. We it might be worth a fortune in 10 years time! "
In a strange way we are both hoarders. What makes this rather funny, is the fact that we didn't even buy most of this stuff we had discussions over. It came with the house, or we took over someone else's throw-outs.

This farm used to belong to a hobby wine farmer and I did find 3 liter bottles of what I think is his wine. Alas, the corks have been bitten to little shreds by ants or some such....needs to be thrown out. Hip hip hooray for Screw tops.

How often do we put things in our cupboards & sheds because we think there is the slightest chance years down the road, that we might use it? Who isn't sometimes afraid to open their cupboards and face a sea of paraphernalia that is almost depressing? Maybe Bob and I should enter one of those Das Perfekte Dinner programs because you can bet your bottom dollar that some nosy - parker will snoop into your private cupboards. Of course only to be filmed while doing it...

Throwing stuff out you need to be ruthless and apply that well know concept of: If you haven't used it in six months, say Goodbye to it. That only works in an episode of Oprah though.

Going through clothes is even harder. Haven't worn this in six months? No, it needs to be clarified. Has it not been worn because it

  • mysteriously got too tight? Washing machine malfunction of course!
  • you don't like the colour any more.
  • your spouse asked you if you are going to really wear this?
As you can see, weeding out anything is jolly hard going. Sometimes the best way to do it, is to just put it on the trailer and drive it to Höll.
