In The Heat Of The Day...

 The incessant summer.

Thank goodness for our old house. The walls are about 60 cm thick and thus keeps our house nice and cool. Granted, the ceiling / roof isn't insulated to today's standards, but still, we somehow have our own little air-conditioned space. Bravo to the builders of yore.

A couple of years ago our new-ish next door neighbour came in for something or other and the first thing she commented on was how lovely and cool our house was. Turns out that their newly built house was a proverbial sauna in summer. What were the architects thinking? Well, the following summer they installed an air-conditioner. Makes one think, doesn't it about the good old ways?

So, after mowing lawns and cleaning cottages this morning, we stayed indoors after lunch. No good going outside as it must be in the mid-thirties out there or at least it feels like it. Bob and I were lounging on the sofas when we stumbled upon a re-run of an Agatha Christie murder mystery. Dubbed into German but still a breath of fresh air on a hot summer's day.

To me there is such a comforting feeling associated with watching or reading anything by Agatha Christie and Bob enjoyed it too. A time where cell phones weren't even thought about, a time where children proudly wore hand-knitted jerseys and played outside without needing any electronic childminders.

The heat is set to continue but thankfully summer is nearing its end. Again, I am extremely grateful that we have a home to live in and that apart from feeling the heat, we aren't afflicted by nature's reminders about our collective deviation from taking care of it. It isn't that far from us that people have lost their homes and sadly also lives in fires and floods. Kind of puts everything into perspective, doesn't it?
