Once you've tried it, could you possibly live without Skype?
Just like that other Titan or Icon, Coca Cola, Skype is neither here nor there until you've received your first taste of it. It is that first sip of Coca Cola or first glimpse of an otherwise only ' seen on holiday ' relative, that seals the deal. Oh yes, try wrestling a Skype connection away once its been used.
Emigrating nowadays could almost be called a synch. Once you have a broadband ( old school ) or Fiber optic ( desired technology highway of choice ) your family and loved ones are just a mouse click away...
Take yesterday for example. Harry, Bob's Dad turned 70 this week. By the way Harry, 70 is the new 50! An incredible surprise party was planed for yesterday. Bob & I couldn't be there, as flying to South Africa was just not a possibility for us. But, it was promised that a Skype connection would be there for the speeches at least.
With a mere Skype connection, we could be shown around and got a chance to say " Hello " to most of the family. It was rather funny, when Angela took the laptop and said: " I think I'll lift you up and carry you around with me. " It was priceless, to be a part of the celebrations.
You know, if you are over 30, this type of stuff is not normal or expected. Being able to witness, see or take part in a party an ocean and continent away yet in real time, is amazing. Often I wonder how that signal goes 1000's of km's at that one second speed? Wow, those inventors are brilliant and deserve accolades the world over.
Skype is just marvelous and best of all, it is free. There might be one tiny weeny negative aspect to Skype. Remember that old fashioned telephone in your lounge? The one, that you could answer regardless of how you were dressed. Gosh, even straight out the shower, all you needed was a towel. Not so with Skype...
The better the connection, the clearer the picture. Oh yes, never forget that people can see you too!
